Indonesia : 10 years jail for alleged people smuggler

boat

Indonesian prosecutors want a 10-year jail term for the man allegedly behind a doomed asylum seeker boat voyage to Australia.

Pakistani man Hasan Billu is accused of running a smuggling operation that sent a boat to Australia in June last year, with more than 200 asylum seekers on board.

It sank north of Christmas Island, killing about 100 people.

Billu is facing smuggling charges in Jakarta and prosecutors want him jailed for 10 years and fined 500 million rupiah ($45,000).

They claim there is enough evidence to convict him of smuggling charges over the deadly boat journey, and another boat that was sent in February this year.

Another member of the alleged smuggling syndicate, who is already in jail, has given evidence against Billu.

Billu has denied involvement but will begin his official defence when the case resumes next year.

Calls to rethink Australia’s asylum policy

Several prominent Australians from a range of fields have come together to call for a rethink on asylum seekers.

The group – consisting of lawyers, refugees, a priest and a former Defence Chief – contributed to a new book entitled “Refugees and asylum seekers: Finding a better way”.

The 24 essays explore how Australia can reframe the refugee debate to be more humane and inclusive.

Contributors insist it is not political.

Their views and recommendations differ, but all want a change in the public discourse around asylum seekers.

The book was the brainchild of think-tank Australia 21.

The book’s release comes as the federal government introduces a code of conduct for asylum-seekers living in Australia as a condition of their bridging visa renewals.

The code has come under fierce criticism from refugee advocates who say it criminalises asylum  seekers.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says it is «high time» Indonesia resumed cooperation with Australia to stop the flow of asylum seeker boats.

Indonesia suspended military cooperation on people smuggling operations following revelations that Australia attempted to spy on Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s phone and those of his wife and inner circle in 2009.

The revelations were uncovered in documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and reported by The Guardian and the ABC.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says no changes to border protection despite softer language from PM

scott morrison اسکات موریسون

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says there will be no change to Australia’s border protection policies despite an apparent softening in the Prime Minister’s language around the issue earlier this week

Some media had questioned whether Tony Abbott’s comments in Indonesia signalled the Coalition was abandoning its plan to buy asylum seeker boats from Indonesian fishermen

Questions had also been raised about whether the Government was still committed to turning asylum seeker boats back to Indonesia

«I wish to stress that the full arsenal of measures represented in the Coalition’s policies to stop the boats remain available to be deployed by the Government,» Mr Morrison said

«As the Prime Minister himself said everything remains on the table

«Despite the wishful thinking and projection by some that I saw in some media reports there is no change to the Government’s policy on border protection.»

Big group of isolated small people in a line
